WHAT ARE IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES?

Implant-supported dentures also referred to as overdentures are a practical solution for those missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Unlike traditional dentures that rely on the suction force for stability, implant-retained dentures are secured using dental implants, resulting in a more comfortable and secure fit that closely resembles natural teeth.

With the ability to eat, smile, and laugh without discomfort or fear of denture slippage, implant-retained dentures can significantly improve one’s quality of life. Additionally, these dentures can help prevent bone loss that often occurs after tooth loss, contributing to better oral health in the long run.

Understanding the Differences:

Traditional Dentures
Construction: Rely on the support of the gums and the underlying bone for stability.
Fit and Stability: Traditional dentures rest directly on the gums and may require dental adhesive or suction to stay in place. However, they can sometimes slip or shift during eating or speaking, causing discomfort and affecting speech.
Bone Loss: When teeth are lost, the underlying bone in the jaw starts to deteriorate over time due to lack of stimulation. Traditional dentures do not address this issue, and the bone can continue to shrink, affecting facial structure and denture fit.
Chewing Efficiency: Traditional dentures may feel bulky, which can affect the ability to chew and enjoy certain foods. They provide less bite force compared to natural teeth or implant-supported dentures.
Maintenance: Traditional dentures need to be removed and cleaned daily. They should also be replaced periodically as the shape of the jaw changes.

Construction: secured by dental implants, which are small titanium posts placed into the jawbone.
Fit and Stability: Anchored to the implants. This prevents slippage, enhances speech, and eliminates the need for adhesives.
Bone Preservation: Dental implants integrate with the jawbone, providing stimulation that helps prevent bone loss. This preserves the jawbone's density and structure, maintaining facial aesthetics and preventing denture-related bone shrinkage.
Chewing Efficiency: Implant-supported dentures offer improved chewing efficiency compared to traditional dentures. The stability provided by the implants allows for a stronger bite force and the ability to enjoy a wider range of foods.
Maintenance: Implant-supported dentures are removable for cleaning but are securely attached to the implants during regular use. They require regular dental check-ups and maintenance to ensure the implants are in good condition.

typical Procedure for an overdenture

Consultation and examination

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a dental professional who will examine your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and discuss your treatment goals.

Implant placement

If dental implants are needed to support the overdenture, the next step is to place the implants into the jawbone surgically. The number of implants required will depend on the specific case and can range from 2 to 6.

Healing and integration

After implant placement, a healing period of several months is required to allow the implants to fuse with the surrounding bone in an osseointegration process. During this time, you can wear a temporary denture.

Abutment placement

Once the implants have fully integrated, abutments (connectors) are attached to the implants to support the overdenture.

Impression and fabrication

An impression of the abutments and gums is taken, and the overdenture is fabricated.

Fitting and adjustments

Once the overdenture is complete, it is fitted and adjusted to ensure a comfortable and precise fit.

How to care for my Implant-supported dentures?

Proper maintenance helps ensure your new implant-supported dentures last as long as possible. To keep them in excellent condition:

Clean dentures twice daily.
Soak removable dentures overnight in a denture solution.
Brush fixed dentures gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste.
Thoroughly brush and floss around dental implants.
Regularly visit your dentist for check-ups and cleanings.
